Professional development is widely recognised as being very important to the development of your (you guessed it!) profession! But have you ever thought that your walk with the Lord might benefit from some ‘professional development’ also? Life can get pretty busy and before we know it we can feel frustrated in our walk with the Lord for various reason. Perhaps we are working big hours and struggle to keep a habit of prayer and reading the Bible, maybe you are a new mum and cry out ‘where did all my time go!’, or are you a student struggling to stay motivated in your studies and also in your pursuit of God?

My challenge for you is this: look at your calendar for the next month. And find ONE time slot for a few hours and spend that time investing in your relationship with the Lord – setting a few hours aside for the joy of prayer, reading God’s word, an edifying Christian book – anything that develops your relationship with God. I would encourage you to tailor this to your personality.   Go somewhere you love to be, maybe a nice café, perhaps you have a wonderful sun room or perhaps like me you enjoy being surrounded by nature in a national park. I have greatly benefited from this ‘professional development’ approach to my own discipleship, and I think you would too. Why? Because the Lord rewards those who earnestly seek him (Heb 11:6), increasing our faith, hope, and joy in Christ as we love God more and more.  Also, if you set aside a few hours, that is enough time for you to really grow even if you get distracted a few times! If this sounds weird to you then my encouragement is to give it a go! I think you will find, like countless Christians before you, that dedicating a block of time committed to this end will enrich your faith and strengthen you as you continue to ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ (Ps 34:8). My prayer for you is that you would make this a regular habit because you love it so much.
